The Federal Aviation Administration will launch an $875 million automated software program called Smart to help manage air traffic control shortages and navigation routes across the country. Developed by Air Space Intelligence, Smart stands for Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories and operates as a cloud-based platform that integrates with existing FAA systems. The software uses artificial intelligence to evaluate airline schedules, weather conditions, airport capacity, and airspace constraints to predict traffic flows and flag potential conflicts in advance. The program will roll out first in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area before expanding to other regions over a 12-year period. This initiative coincides with a separate federal hiring plan aimed at addressing long-standing staffing shortages within the nation's air traffic control infrastructure.
