Fake Notices Sent to Block Rights Groups' Accounts, X Tells Delhi High Court

· India · Times of India, Hindustan Times, Bollywood Hungama

Social media platform X informed the Delhi High Court that legal notices ordering the blocking of accounts belonging to two digital rights bodies were sent by an imposter. The notices aimed to suspend the handles of the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) and the Software Freedom Law Centre (SFLC) under the guise of Delhi Police orders. Counsel for X told Justice Amit Mahajan that an internal investigation exposed the forgery, prompting X to file a formal complaint with the Delhi Police. X confirmed to the court that the accounts of both IFF and SFLC will remain active and will not be taken down. The Delhi High Court disposed of the petitions filed by IFF and SFLC following X's clarification.

Why it matters

The incident highlights vulnerabilities in online takedown procedures and prevents the unauthorized suppression of prominent digital rights organizations in India.
