Families Demand Removal of Seoul Crowd Crush Footage from Call of Duty Game

· Technology · The Guardian, New York Times

Bereaved families in South Korea have demanded that Activision, the publisher of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, remove real footage of the deadly 2022 Seoul crowd crush from the new video game. The clips, which show scenes of chaos, CPR, and bodies, are used in the game's opening cinematic to depict civilian casualties during a fictional North Korean invasion. A total of 158 people died in the Itaewon district crush. Activision stated it had no intention of trivialising the tragedy, using the footage to convey a fictional story.

Why it matters

The use of real-life tragedy in a video game has caused significant distress to victims' families and raises ethical questions about media representation of sensitive events, potentially impacting the game's reception and industry practices.
