Family Alleges Forced Cremation of Dalit Labourer in Punjab's Sangrur

The family of 47-year-old Dalit labourer Gulzar Singh has alleged that district authorities in Punjab's Sangrur district forcibly conducted his last rites without their consent. Gulzar died by suicide on Monday night after allegedly facing harassment, caste-based abuse, and police pressure following a public confrontation with Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema over the local drug menace. His son Lakhwinder Singh stated that relatives were denied the opportunity to view his face or collect his belongings before the cremation. National Commission for Scheduled Castes Chairman Kishor Makwana met the bereaved family on Thursday to review the case. Police have registered an FIR against five residents under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
