FBI official warns 9/11 is still inspiring terrorists inside America 25 years later

· World · ABC News, India Today

Twenty-five years after the al-Qaeda attacks, federal authorities warn that foreign terrorist organizations continue to target the US through online radicalization. FBI co-deputy director Chris Raia stated that groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS are actively developing lone offenders inside the US homeland via the internet and social media. In the past year and a half, the FBI has arrested at least 16 people inside the US for allegedly plotting attacks on behalf of these groups. Intelligence reports indicate that ISIS and al-Qaeda maintain overseas memberships of up to 18,000 and 28,000 respectively. In August, authorities arrested 35-year-old Jessica Bowie in Albany, New York, for allegedly plotting to bomb the state capitol while citing September 11 on social media.

Why it matters

The persistent threat of online radicalization poses severe challenges for US domestic intelligence agencies attempting to detect decentralized lone-wolf plots.
