Fermi Explorer Plans 80,000-Year Mission to Alpha Centauri

The non-profit Fermi Explorer is seeking partners and funding for a 2029 mission to send a 1kg spacecraft on an 80,000-year journey to Alpha Centauri. Founded by the team behind the startup Starcloud, the project aims to be the first human-built object explicitly targeted at another star using existing technology. The mission is estimated to cost $15 million and is designed to test the limits of the Fermi paradox. Unlike the multi-billion dollar Breakthrough Starshot project, which collapsed in 2025, this mission prioritizes feasibility over speed.
