Fifa Proposes £2.6bn Boost for Global Football Development

· Sports · BBC Sport, BBC News

Fifa plans to propose a $3.4bn (£2.6bn) increase in its global football development funding during a council meeting on Thursday. The governing body will release the funds from its reserves following the commercial success of the recent World Cup. The proposal would more than double planned distribution funding for the 2027-2030 cycle, bringing total spending to $6.35bn (£4.83bn). The plan allocates one-third to women's and youth football, one-third to infrastructure, and one-third to specific projects. The initiative requires finalisation by the Fifa council in December 2026 and approval at the Fifa congress in March 2027.

Why it matters

The funding boost directly impacts 211 member associations, confederations, and regional bodies, significantly expanding resources for grassroots infrastructure, youth programmes, and women's football.
