Filmmaker Raja Sen Dies at 71 in Kolkata Hospital

Raja Sen, the veteran Bengali filmmaker, died at age 71 on Sunday at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata after a prolonged illness. He had been on ventilator support following lung, heart and kidney complications that worsened in the days before his death. The complications followed an earlier admission to a private hospital for a lower‑back injury. Sen’s debut feature Damu (1996) won the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film, and he later directed films such as Atmiyo Swajan, Desh, Debipaksha and Maya Mridanga, with Desh starring Jaya Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. He also made documentaries on cultural figures like Rabindra Sangeet exponent Suchitra Mitra, and his death has cast a pall over the Bengali film and television industry.
