Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta Criticises Bollywood Posters Depicting Smoking
· Entertainment · Indian Express, Bollywood Hungama
Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has questioned the frequent depiction of smoking by leading actors on Bollywood film posters. In a social media post on Sunday, Gupta shared a collage featuring Ranbir Kapoor in Animal, Ranveer Singh in Dhurandhar, and Vicky Kaushal in Love & War. He contrasted the imagery with mandatory anti-smoking warnings shown before and during films in theatres. The criticism arrives alongside stricter regulatory changes issued by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry under the Cinematograph Act. The ministry notified revised guidelines on September 16, requiring specific on-screen anti-drug warnings for films depicting narcotic substance consumption or trafficking.
Why it matters
The criticism puts the spotlight on the disconnect between statutory anti-smoking disclaimers and promotional marketing materials used by major film productions in Mumbai.
