First Cargo Vessel From Assam To Bangladesh Flagged Off
· India · Hindustan Times, Times of India
A barge carrying 540 metric tonnes of methanol departed from the Bogibeel terminal in Dibrugarh, Assam, on Monday, marking the first cargo shipment to Bangladesh since 1947. The vessel is bound for Pangaon Port in Dhaka, traveling 1,300 kilometres via the Brahmaputra river and the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route. Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off the ship, which is carrying methanol produced by the state-owned Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd. This voyage serves as a test to determine if the Brahmaputra can function as a commercially viable freight corridor for the Northeast. Regular steamer services from the Dibrugarh ghat were discontinued in 1954 following the 1947 partition and a 1950 earthquake.
Why it matters
The route aims to integrate the Northeast into international markets by establishing a direct, cost-effective waterborne freight link to Bangladesh.
