First Kanda Express Carrying 800 Tonnes of Onions to Reach Delhi

The first 'Kanda Express' carrying 800 tonnes of onions will arrive in Delhi on Wednesday, with the produce to be retailed at a subsidised rate of ₹35 per kg. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare announced that the subsidised onions will be sold through Nafed, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar stores in the national capital. Bulk shipments are also being transported via dedicated railway rakes to Chennai, Ernakulam, Madurai, and Guwahati from buffer stocks maintained in Nashik, Maharashtra. Government data shows all-India average retail onion prices rose 59 per cent year-on-year to ₹43.53 per kg by August 24. The initiative is part of the Price Stabilisation Fund scheme, which maintains a buffer stock of 1.21 lakh tonnes for 2026 to curb seasonal price spikes.
