First US Trial Against TikTok Begins Over Teen Mental Health Claims

An Alabama jury is set to hear state allegations that TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance designed an addictive platform that misled consumers about youth safety. The trial, scheduled to begin Monday in a Montgomery state court, is expected to last two to three weeks and marks the first social media addiction lawsuit against the company to reach trial. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall filed the lawsuit last year, joining at least 27 other states and Washington, D.C., in similar litigation. TikTok argues that its platform prioritizes teen safety and that Section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act shields online platforms from liability over user content. The lawsuit claims that algorithmic content streams have driven an increase in emergency room visits for youth self-harm in Alabama.
