· World · Al Jazeera, The Independent
Chancellor John Healey unveiled the first Labour government budget since Prime Minister Keir Starmer took office three months ago. A one-off £100 ($133) energy rebate will go to 20 million households living in homes valued at £88,000 or less, based on 1991 price valuations. The temporary VAT reduction has been extended until 1 July, lowering the annual price cap by £50 ($66.50). The Office for Budget Responsibility downgraded the 2027 growth forecast to 1 percent from 1.5 percent and predicted no real earnings growth next year. Economist James Meadway of the left-wing think tank Verdant said the measures would not tackle the cost-of-living crisis in any serious way.
