Five Killed in Fresh Ethnic Violence Across Manipur Districts
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
Five people, including a woman and a 22-year-old man, were killed in fresh clashes among armed groups across Manipur's Kamjong, Ukhrul, and Kangpokpi districts. In the Kuki-dominated Chassad village of Kamjong, a 42-year-old mother of five was shot dead, triggering an exchange of fire between Kuki and Naga armed groups that left a man dead and 10 houses torched. District authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 162 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita near the Chassad police gate junction. In a separate incident at Ningchou village in Kamjong, two men aged 35 and 48 were shot dead by suspected militants who later fled toward the Myanmar border. Meanwhile, in Ukhrul district, a 40-year-old man named Sandeep Rai was shot dead inside his vehicle near Chepu Yaolen. More than 40 people have been killed since violence between Kuki and Naga communities broke out in February, adding to the broader ethnic conflict that has claimed over 260 lives since May 2023.
Why it matters
The escalation of ethnic clashes in Manipur deepens the security crisis across multiple districts, displacing families and prompting strict prohibitory orders by local authorities.
