Five Killed in West Bengal Police Encounters Since May

· India · The Hindu, Indian Express

Since the BJP government assumed power in West Bengal in May, five individuals have died in police encounters, including three murder suspects and two people charged with sexual assault. Within a 12-hour window on October 27, police killed two murder accused in separate incidents in North 24 Parganas and Murshidabad districts. In each case, police stated the suspects were killed during crime scene reconstructions after attempting to snatch service weapons and fire at officers. A similar incident occurred in July in Baruipur, where a suspect in the rape and murder of a minor was killed under comparable circumstances. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has not commented directly on the specific deaths but stated the matter is under review by the police-CID.

Why it matters

The recurring nature of these deaths during police custody reconstructions has sparked concerns regarding law enforcement protocols and the transparency of investigations into custodial fatalities in West Bengal.
