Flash Floods in Nepal's Rasuwa District Kill 157 People

· World · Euronews, Times of India, Indian Express

A flash flood in Nepal's Rasuwa district has killed 157 people and left hundreds missing after an ice and rock avalanche blocked a tributary near the border with Tibet. The natural dam burst on August 26, sending a torrent of water and debris through the Trishuli valley, causing severe damage in Rasuwagadhi, Timure, and Syabrubesi. Infrastructure including 19 road bridges and 40 kilometres of roads were destroyed, disrupting the Kathmandu-Kerung trade route. Rescue operations involving the army and police are currently hampered by unstable slopes and poor weather conditions. The government has declared Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading as disaster crisis areas.

Why it matters

The disaster has caused significant loss of life and severed a critical cross-border trade route between Nepal and Tibet, impacting regional connectivity and local livelihoods.
