Flipkart Surpasses Amazon in User Growth as Quick Commerce Expands in India
· Business · Times of India, Economic Times
Flipkart has outpaced Amazon in user growth, widening its lead in India’s online retail market with a 15% year-on-year increase in monthly active users (MAUs) in July 2026, while Amazon’s MAU base contracted between 1% and 6%. Together, Flipkart and Myntra now hold a 35% share of India’s MAUs, nearly doubling their lead over Amazon—from 9 percentage points in 2022 to 17 points currently. Flipkart’s gross merchandise value (GMV) has also consistently outpaced Amazon’s by about 10 percentage points since 2019, despite Amazon’s dominance in transaction volume. The company’s quick-commerce arm, Flipkart Minutes, has scaled rapidly, handling 1.1–1.2 million daily orders—nearly matching Swiggy Instamart’s 1.4 million orders—less than two years after its launch in August 2024. This shift reflects broader growth in India’s quick-commerce sector, with platforms expanding beyond groceries into smaller cities and towns.
Why it matters
Consumers and small businesses in India benefit from Flipkart’s aggressive expansion, gaining faster delivery options and a broader range of products, while Amazon’s market share erodes. The rise of quick-commerce platforms like Flipkart Minutes also pressures traditional e-commerce models, potentially reshaping how retailers compete for urban and semi-urban consumers.
