Flox Intelligence develops AI to deter wildlife from infrastructure, exits KTH lab in 2020

· Technology · TechCrunch

Sara Nozkova founded Flox Intelligence after experiencing a train-bison collision as a child in India, which damaged a train engine and forced a tow. The FAA estimates U.S. wildlife strikes cost $272 million annually between 1990 and 2025, and SNCF reports wandering animals affect over 8,000 trains yearly in France, causing significant delays. Flox creates edge devices that process data on-site using perception systems to identify animal species and behavior, then deploy tailored deterrents like sounds or lights instead of static fences or culling. The company, a 2020 spin-out from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, is a finalist in the Startup Battlefield 200 at TechCrunch Disrupt, having pitched VC judges on Tuesday.

Why it matters

The technology could reduce costly wildlife-infrastructure collisions that damage vehicles, delay services, and threaten animal populations across railways, roads, and airports globally.
