Food Regulator Proposes Ban on Added Sugars in Infant Formula
· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has proposed banning added sweeteners such as sucrose and fructose in infant formula intended for babies up to six months old. The draft amendment modifies existing regulations that currently permit lactose and glucose polymers up to 20 per cent of total carbohydrates. Companies can continue using added sugars within permissible limits for children between the ages of six and 24 months. The Union Health Ministry stated that the measure supports exclusive breastfeeding and addresses dietary risk factors linked to childhood obesity. Stakeholders have been given 60 days to submit objections and comments on the draft notification.
Why it matters
The proposed regulation directly impacts infant formula manufacturers operating in India and aims to protect newborns from early sugar exposure linked to childhood obesity.
