Ford Fathom EV to Power Homes, Priced Under $30K
· Automobile · Car and Driver, TechCrunch, NBC News
The 2028 Ford Fathom electric truck will offer bidirectional charging capabilities, allowing it to power a home. Ford expects the Fathom to start below $30,000, with an additional home power setup costing around $2,255. This integrated system will enable the truck to charge when electricity is cheaper and supply power to a home during peak prices or outages. While bidirectional charging exists in other EVs like the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, the Fathom aims to be one of the most affordable options with this functionality. Ford previously offered this feature on the F-150 Lightning, but the Fathom will have an integrated power inverter, reducing the cost of additional hardware.
Why it matters
This makes home energy management and backup power more accessible, potentially lowering electricity costs for consumers and providing resilience during power outages. It also increases competition in the bidirectional EV market by offering a more affordable option.
