Foreign Airlines Challenge Mumbai Airport Slot Denial to Civil Aviation Ministry

· World · LiveMint, Indian Express

Twelve foreign airlines, primarily from the Gulf and West Asia, have petitioned the civil aviation ministry to reverse Mumbai airport's refusal of take-off and landing slots for the upcoming summer schedule, which would force their flights to Navi Mumbai or cancellation. The airlines operate 112 weekly flights across 14 destinations including Bahrain, Dammam, Dhaka and Doha, representing nearly 15% of Mumbai's 770 weekly international departures. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), a joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings and the Airports Authority of India, settled its slot list on Thursday, allocating space for 38 of 50 international airlines but denying the 12. The Airline Operators Committee (AOC), Mumbai, formally requested clarification from civil aviation secretary Samir Kumar Sinha on whether MIAL had ministry approval to reduce capacity and revoke long-standing slots.

Why it matters

The 12 affected airlines and their 112 weekly flights directly impact Indian travelers connecting through Mumbai to Gulf and West Asia destinations, while the dispute highlights operational tensions between airport capacity management and airline slot rights.
