The government aims to shift immigration rules away from demand-driven settings to gain more control over arrival and departure numbers. Officials intend to reduce net overseas migration from about 305,000 to roughly 225,000 over a two-year period. Last year, Australia issued more than 337,000 international student visas, with approximately 45,000 granted to dependents.
