Former Central Bank Adviser Disputes Trump Claim of Iranian Economic Collapse
· World · CNBC, CBS News
Mehrdad Sepahvand, a former economic adviser to the Central Bank of Iran, pushed back against President Donald Trump's assertion that the Iranian economy is on the brink of collapse. Speaking on CNBC, Sepahvand warned that the UAE's decision to sever trade ties could deepen Iran's economic contraction to about 5% this year under the weight of mounting sanctions. The economic pressure campaign, dubbed Operation Economic Fury, follows the collapse of ceasefire talks and aims to cut off regime revenue streams and terror financing. World Bank data shows Iran's GDP contracted by 2.7% in the year ending March, with inflation surging to 62.2% in February and food price inflation reaching a historical high of 99%. Despite job losses and severe banking imbalances, Sepahvand noted that shops remain stocked with basic goods and public confidence in the banking system has not suffered a total run.
