Former DR Congo President Joseph Kabila Leads New Rebel Coalition
· World · BBC News, France 24
Former Congolese President Joseph Kabila has been named the leader of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation, a new rebel coalition aiming to oust the current government. The group announced its formation at a press conference in Goma, a city in eastern DR Congo currently held by M23 rebels. Video footage shows Kabila signing documents alongside M23 leader Sultani Makenga, who will serve as one of his four deputies. The coalition stated it intends to use all means, including force, to end what it describes as tyranny. Kabila, who ruled from 2001 to 2019, has become increasingly critical of President Félix Tshisekedi's administration, citing economic mismanagement and security failures.
Why it matters
The formal entry of a former head of state into an armed rebellion significantly escalates the political and security crisis in the mineral-rich eastern DR Congo. This development threatens to deepen the conflict between the government and various militia groups, further destabilizing the region.
