Former security camp repurposed as tribal hostel in Narayanpur

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times

A former security camp in Bhatpal village, Narayanpur district of Chhattisgarh's Bastar division, has been converted into a residential facility for over 150 tribal schoolboys. The campus now operates two sections: a hostel for 100 pre-Matriculation Scheduled Tribes boys from Classes 6 to 10, currently accommodating 114 students, and a Post-Matriculation hostel for Classes 11 and 12 with a sanctioned capacity of 50, currently housing 39 students. The initiative was launched after the Union government declared India free from Left Wing Extremism, marking a shift from security-oriented infrastructure to education-focused facilities. Narayanpur Collector Namrata Jain stated this is the first such conversion in the Bastar division.

Why it matters

The hostel provides a safe and affordable residential option for tribal students from remote villages like Rajbeda, eliminating the need to stay outside school premises and incur additional accommodation costs. It directly addresses educational access challenges in the insurgency-affected Bastar region.
