Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was acquitted Friday in a case involving the 2023 drowning death of a marine, Cpl. Chae Su-geun. Prosecutors had alleged that Yoon appointed former Defense Minister Lee Jong-Sup as ambassador to Australia to help him evade a criminal investigation. The Seoul Central District Court ruled that it remained unclear whether the appointment was intended to disrupt the probe. Yoon, who was removed from office in April 2025, continues to face other criminal trials, including a conviction for rebellion related to his brief imposition of martial law in December 2024.
