Former Tottenham Defender Ramon Vega to Run for FIFA President
· Sports · BBC Sport
Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has announced his intention to run as a candidate in next year's FIFA presidential election. The 55-year-old Swiss former centre-back is the first person to challenge incumbent Gianni Infantino, who faces widespread backlash following his failed plan to sell World Cup stakes to private investors. Vega, who has worked in finance since retiring in 2004, stated that his campaign aims to reunite global football, deliver governance reform, and restore institutional credibility. Infantino has previously stated that he remains fully committed to leading FIFA despite calls to resign from UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation. Vega previously explored bids for the presidency in 2015 and 2019, though he failed to secure the required backing of five member federations during his last attempt.
Why it matters
