Formula 1 races will be reduced from 305 to 290 kilometres starting in the 2027 season. The Formula 1 Commission approved the change in London, citing alignment with new power unit regulations for 2027. The strict three-hour overall event cap has been abolished to allow organisers flexibility to complete full race distances despite delays. While the two-hour maximum of active racing time remains, practice sessions will also gain flexibility to extend following stoppages. The reduction corresponds to a decrease of two or three laps per race. The decision aims to improve the spectator experience during disruptions like rain or red flags.
