Formula 1 reduces grand prix distance to 290km for 2027 season

Formula 1 has announced that the maximum race distance for grands prix will be reduced by 15km from 305km to 290km for the 2027 season. The change is being made because the ratio of internal combustion to electrical power in the cars will shift to 60-40 by 2028, increasing fuel consumption and raising concerns that existing fuel tanks may not allow cars to finish races. To address potential disruptions, a "hard stop time" will replace the current three-hour limit, allowing greater flexibility to complete races interrupted by rain or accidents. The hard stop time will vary by race depending on local conditions, such as sunset times at night races. The FIA stated the changes aim to ensure spectators have the best chance to enjoy a full race if disruptions occur. Additionally, free practice sessions will gain greater flexibility to be extended if interrupted by red flags.
