Formula One Could Return to India After 12-Year Absence

· Sports · Times of India, Al Jazeera

The Indian Grand Prix ran at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida from 2011 to 2013 before stopping over tax disputes, customs hurdles and a Uttar Pradesh government demand to classify it as entertainment rather than sport. Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali met Indian officials recently to discuss a revival, and the UP government has indicated it may reclassify the event as a sport to ease the tax burden. No date or contract has been confirmed, and the circuit has not hosted a major race since 2013. The 5.14 km track remains FIA Grade 1 certified.

Why it matters

A return would bring a global sporting event back to India, create local jobs and tourism revenue, and signal that regulatory hurdles that drove F1 away have been resolved.
