· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times
Unidentified gunmen ambushed travellers on a village road in Manipur's Kangpokpi district, killing four Naga civilians. The incident occurred around 8.30 a.m. between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga villages as the victims travelled from Makui to Senapati. The villagers identified the deceased as Tadsongbou Ringkangmai, Mariakdibou Wijunamai, Anil Wijunamai, and Wisobou Charenamai, while another traveller was injured and one reported missing. The attack took place during ongoing peace efforts by the state government, which recently resumed the Imphal-Guwahati bus service via National Highway-2 following years of blockades. The Manipur government and state authorities did not immediately issue a statement regarding the ambush.
Why it matters
The attack heightens ethnic tensions between Naga and Kuki-Zo communities along a key transit route in Manipur, disrupting recent state-led peace and transport restoration efforts.
