· World · Al Jazeera, France 24, BBC News
At least 250,000 students, teachers, and parents protested across France on Tuesday to demand better resources for public schools. The movement began on September 17 in the Paris suburb of Creteil, with demonstrators citing dilapidated buildings, teacher shortages, and overcrowded classrooms. Police have arrested more than 6,000 protesters, 85 percent of whom are under 18. Officials report that 210 teenagers and 715 police officers have been wounded during the unrest. Education Minister Edouard Geffray met with student leaders on October 2, but his proposed five-point reform plan was rejected by the protesters.
