Fresh Flood Risk Persists Downstream of Nepal's Bhote Koshi After New Lake Forms

A fresh flood risk persists in downstream areas of the Bhote Koshi River in Nepal's Rasuwa district following the formation of a new barrier lake near the river's source. Chinese authorities informed Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the lake at a river blockage site near the Nepal-China border, which has accumulated around 2 million cubic metres of water by Thursday morning. Officials estimate that an additional 3 million cubic metres of water could enter the lake over the next three days, raising breach concerns. The lake formed near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers, originating in Tibet and flowing into Nepal. Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged residents, travellers, and rescue personnel in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river areas to stay away from river banks.
