From 33 to 12 hours, 14 to 6: Vande Bharat, roads cutting travel time drastically

India’s New Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat service is about 40–50% faster than earlier services on the route. The Bhupen Hazarika Setu reduced the Rupai-Meka/Roing crossing in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from six hours to one hour. The Bogibeel Bridge cut the Dhemaji-Dibrugarh journey from almost a day to one to two hours, while the Atal Setu cut Mumbai-Navi Mumbai from about two hours to 20 minutes. The Kosi Rail Mahasetu cut the Nirmali-Saraigarh rail journey from eight hours to 30 minutes and shortened it from about 300 km to 22 km. Atal and Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee tunnels save four to five hours on Manali-Sarchu and nearly two hours on Jammu-Srinagar, respectively. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway cut its journey from about two and a half hours to 50 minutes, while the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway cut it from nearly three hours to about 75 minutes.
Why it matters
Passengers on these Indian routes face shorter journeys, with some bridges and tunnels also providing all-weather or more direct access. The government factsheet cites these examples as evidence of reduced travel time from infrastructure projects.
