Keralam’s prominent cultural icon and founder of the Soorya Stage and Film Society, Nataraja ‘Soorya’ Krishnamoorthy, died on Wednesday at the age of 78 in Thiruvananthapuram. Born in Keralam’s Kottayam district, Krishnamoorthy graduated in electrical engineering from TKM College of Engineering in Kollam and began his career as a space scientist at ISRO in 1972, working alongside veteran scientist and future President APJ Abdul Kalam. After serving at ISRO for 27 years, he took voluntary retirement in 1999 to dedicate himself entirely to the promotion of art and culture. Over his lifetime, he founded the Soorya festival in 1977, introduced the first light-and-sound show in Malayalam in 1978, and expanded his society into Asia's largest cultural organisation. His passing comes just days before the 48th edition of the Soorya festival was scheduled to begin its 111-day run on October 1.
