From strange worlds to rare planets: Nasa’s Roman Telescope begins its cosmic hunt

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope successfully launched from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The observatory is currently traveling toward Lagrange Point 2, located 1 million miles from Earth, where it will begin a mission to study dark matter, dark energy, and exoplanets. Equipped with a wide-field infrared camera, the telescope is designed to survey the universe at speeds approximately 1,000 times faster than the Hubble Space Telescope. Over its mission duration, the observatory aims to map 2 billion galaxies and identify tens of thousands of new planets. It is expected to take more than three months to reach its final observation destination.

The mission provides scientists with unprecedented tools to map the composition of the universe, potentially revealing the nature of dark matter and dark energy that constitute 95% of its contents.
