FRRO Issues Notice to Actor Imran Khan After BJP Leader's Complaint
· India · Indian Express, NDTV
Actor and U.S. citizen Imran Khan was issued a notice by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office asking him to leave India by October 28, 2026. The notice follows a police complaint filed by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya after Khan attended a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10. Somaiya alleged that the actor violated rules governing foreign nationals in India during the demonstration. Somaiya, a chartered accountant and former Member of Parliament, has a long-standing political career of filing complaints against political rivals and entities. The Gamdevi police forwarded the complaint to the FRRO after detaining Khan during the protest.
Why it matters
The action raises questions about the political use of foreign national regulations against public figures participating in demonstrations.
