· Business · LiveMint, The Hindu

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has released a draft amendment proposing a ban on adding sucrose and fructose to food products intended for infants up to six months old. Published on Friday, the draft Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Amendment Regulations, 2026, aims to strengthen early-life nutritional standards and align with public health guidelines against childhood obesity. Currently, lactose and glucose polymers are recommended as primary carbohydrate sources, while existing rules permit manufacturers to use sucrose and fructose within specified limits. The proposed changes are open for public feedback for 60 days before the regulator considers final implementation. The measure is designed to ensure that commercial infant formulations meet developmental needs without unnecessary added sugars.

Why it matters

The proposed regulations directly affect infant nutrition manufacturers operating in India and aim to reduce early exposure to added sugars for babies.
