FSSAI Proposes Red Front-of-Pack Warning Labels for High-Sugar and High-Fat Foods

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has proposed prominent red front-of-pack warning labels for packaged foods high in added fat, added sugar, or salt. Disclosed in a compliance affidavit filed before the Supreme Court, the proposal uses a red hexagonal warning for products exceeding thresholds prescribed under the Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024. Labels would display declarations such as 'HIGH FAT', 'HIGH SUGAR', and 'HIGH SALT', alongside a separate 'HIGHLY SWEETENED BEVERAGE' warning for specified drinks. The regulator intends the measure to provide consumers with easily comprehensible information to facilitate informed food choices, particularly for children. The proposal follows a Supreme Court intervention on August 13, when a bench questioned the FSSAI's reluctance to adopt warning labels.
