FSSAI Recalls Everest Cumin Powder Over Pesticide Residues
· India · Hindustan Times, PTI, LiveMint
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has ordered an immediate recall of a batch of Everest pre-packed cumin powder after regulatory testing identified unsafe levels of pesticide residues. Samples collected from Riverside Resorts & Holiday Homes in Goa contained Azoxystrobin and Thiamethoxam exceeding prescribed maximum limits. A Referral Food Laboratory confirmed the findings, leading the regulator to declare the batch unsafe under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Additionally, the FSSAI suspended the licence of Creative Bakers and Confectioners Pvt Ltd, which operates The Sugarr & Spice retail chain in Eastern India, citing severe hygiene and food safety violations. Everest must now maintain records of the recalled products and submit a corrective action report to the regulator.
Why it matters
The recall directly impacts consumers who purchased the affected cumin batch, while the licence suspension forces the immediate closure of The Sugarr & Spice outlets in Eastern India due to safety concerns.
