Meeting on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, G4 nations comprising India, Japan, Brazil, and Germany issued a joint statement demanding immediate structural reforms of the UN Security Council. The ministers asserted that the council has lost its credibility and is currently unable to effectively maintain international peace and security. Union external affairs minister S Jaishankar stated on X that the council must become more representative, responsive, and reflective of contemporary geopolitical realities. The joint statement noted that the body's eight-decade-old architecture acts as an impediment to addressing modern global challenges. The G4 reiterated that expanding both permanent and non-permanent membership categories is central to making the council fit-for-purpose.
