Israeli President Isaac Herzog has selected Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot to form Israel's next government, giving him the first opportunity to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Eisenkot called for a national emergency government in a post on X following his designation on November 8. Herzog's decision came after consultations in which political factions representing 67 members of the Knesset recommended Eisenkot, while 46 lawmakers backed Netanyahu. Eisenkot is seeking to bring together political groups by inviting Likud lawmakers to join under conditions that include distancing themselves from far-right partners and committing to military or civilian national service for all citizens. Netanyahu, who relies on ultra-Orthodox and far-right allies, remains at odds with Eisenkot over coalition partners and military exemptions.
