Galgotias Outscores IISc on Research Quality Metric in Times Higher Education Rankings

· India · Hindustan Times, India Today

Private institutions including Galgotias University and Amity University have scored higher than the Indian Institute of Science on the research quality parameter of the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings released on Wednesday. IISc, ranked 254th globally and top in India, placed 64th among 143 Indian institutions on research quality with a score of 51.5, while Greater Noida-based Galgotias University scored 67 and Amity University scored 76.9. The rankings cover 2,297 universities across 118 countries, with research quality accounting for 30% of the overall score. India's research community has criticized the citation-based metrics, pointing out that institutions with high research quality scores often have significant numbers of retractions. Galgotias University previously drew scrutiny in February 2026 after displaying a Chinese robotic dog as its own product at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.

Why it matters

The surprising ranking disparity between private universities and premier research bodies like the IISc raises questions about the reliability of international academic citation metrics.
