A collection of 688 handwritten notes by Mahatma Gandhi sold for $1.69 million (£1.3 million) at a Saffronart auction in Mumbai. The notes, written between 1944 and 1946 to close associate Anand T Hingorani after Gandhi’s wife Vidya’s death, cover truth, non‑violence and self‑restraint. The sale set a record as the highest price ever paid for an Indian historical document at auction, according to Saffronart. The lot also comprised letters, manuscripts, photographs and personal items such as Gandhi’s portable spinning wheel and his notes on the Bhagavad Gita. Saffronart did not disclose the buyer but said the collection will remain in India.
