Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation Elections Set for Sunday With 130 Candidates
· India · Indian Express, Outlook India
Voters in Gandhinagar will head to the polls on Sunday to elect representatives for the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation across 11 wards with 130 candidates in the fray. Half of the 44 seats in the state's smallest municipal corporation are reserved for women, with vote counting scheduled for October 13. In the previous 2021 election, the BJP won 41 of the 44 seats, though subsequent defections left the municipal body with shifting political dynamics. To prevent defections this cycle, the Congress party shifted all 44 of its candidates to undisclosed locations outside Gandhinagar and obtained affidavits stating they will not switch sides to the BJP. Meanwhile, AAP candidate Rahul Vaghela declared support for the BJP after withdrawing from the contest in Ward No. 7.
