Gauhati High Court Questions Assam Government Over Woman Sent to Bangladesh

· India · Times of India, Indian Express

The Gauhati high court has intensified scrutiny into the circumstances surrounding the deportation of Nagaon resident Mumtaz Begum to Bangladesh. The court warned the Assam government that it would presume a Foreigners' Tribunal opinion declaring her a foreigner was not ready when officials acted on it, unless the state establishes the exact finalisation date. Mumtaz was moved through Assam holding facilities and handed over to the BSF on June 13 before being sent across the border on June 14. The Ministry of External Affairs informed the court that an inquiry into her whereabouts remains ongoing. The case originated in April when the high court set aside an earlier tribunal opinion against her and ordered fresh proceedings, after which she appeared before the tribunal on May 30.

Why it matters

The court's scrutiny questions due process in citizenship and deportation proceedings in Assam, directly affecting how state and central authorities handle Foreigners' Tribunal cases.
