Gautam Gambhir Reflects on Dropping Sanju Samson
· Sports · Times of India, Indian Express
India head coach Gautam Gambhir admitted that dropping Sanju Samson during the England T20I series in July was the toughest decision of his coaching tenure. Samson, who was the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup, was left out after the first match to accommodate the debut of teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Gambhir stated the decision was driven by the need for runs at the top of the order and Sooryavanshi's current form. Samson returned to the side for the home series against Afghanistan, where he scored back-to-back fifties in a 3-0 series sweep. Gambhir emphasized that even high-performing players are not guaranteed a permanent spot in the playing XI.
Why it matters
The admission provides insight into the high-pressure selection process managed by the Indian coaching staff. It highlights the competitive nature of the squad and the strategic trade-offs required to maintain winning form.
