GBA invites designs to improve Bengaluru public spaces

· India · The Hindu, Deccan Herald

The Greater Bengaluru Authority has launched Bengaluru Design: Open Call, inviting citizens to submit ideas for enhancing everyday public spaces such as bus stops, streetlights, benches, road medians, waste bins, shopfronts and neighbourhood identities. Proposals for a 500-metre integrated improvement stretch and visual identities for five city corporations can be submitted until November 15, with selections announced by December 13. Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda emphasized the initiative aims to connect public creativity with city needs, promoting accessibility, welcoming environments and livability. Design challenges focus on street lighting, shelter and accessibility at bus stops, public seating comfort, waste bin and signboard redesign, and neighbourhood identities reflecting local history and culture.

Why it matters

The call offers a direct avenue for residents to influence the quality of daily infrastructure they use, potentially reshaping commuter experiences and civic engagement across the metropolitan area. Selected designs will be publicly showcased during Bengaluru Jatre, providing visibility for community-driven urban planning and setting a precedent for participatory governance in other Indian cities.
