Gen Z Protests Spread Across Europe Over Economic Strain And Corruption
· World · India Today, Reuters
Gen Z protesters across Europe are confronting governments over economic inequality, corruption, and poor job opportunities in cities from Paris to Belgrade. Maya Gourdel, a 19-year-old student in Brussels, and Chiara, a 21-year-old student in Milan, point to crumbling school facilities, underpaid jobs, and overpriced housing as core frustrations. While some demonstrations in France have turned violent with thousands of shops damaged and police deploying stun grenades, student-led protests in Serbia culminated in the election toppling of long-time leader Aleksandar Vucic. The youth-led movement builds on similar protests seen in Bangladesh in 2024 and Nepal, as the generation born between 1997 and 2012 demands greater political accountability.
Why it matters
The widespread youth unrest challenges entrenched political leadership across Europe and forces governments to address severe housing shortages, education funding, and cost of living pressures.
