German FA Vice President Demands Gianni Infantino Resign As FIFA President
· Sports · Al Jazeera, Sky News
Hans-Joachim Watzke, vice president of the German Football Association, has called for Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president without delay. Speaking in Berlin, Watzke cited the creation of a self-awarded FIFA Peace Prize for US President Donald Trump and the controversial overturning of a red card against Folarin Balogun as primary reasons for his stance. He also criticised a failed project to invite private investors into a new commercial company, which was unveiled and subsequently dropped within four days. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf echoed these sentiments, stating that the relationship of trust with the current FIFA leadership has been shattered. Infantino remains the sole candidate for the upcoming election scheduled for March 18, 2027.
Why it matters
The loss of support from a major federation like Germany signals deep institutional instability within FIFA ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
